Google Home – Finally a competitor to Amazon Echo?
The stage was Google I/O 2016 and the product showcased was Google Home. Mario Queiroz is heading this product, better known as the man behind Google Chromecast.
What is Google Home?
Google Home is a smart-home controller, which is also an assistant and a wi-fi enabled speaker for the entire family. It’ll answer your questions, playback entertainment throughout your home and effortlessly manage your everyday tasks.
The device itself is a compact (Google demonstrators could hold it in one hand), whose outer shell can be changed to your prefer colour. Underneath the shell is a speaker which allows it to play music and talk to you.
Google Home is always listening to you, thanks to it’s far-field microphones technology, that let’s it hear you from across the room. It also has LED lights on top which allows you to know when it is working.
Google Assistant (integrated in Google Home)
Google announced in Google I/O 2016 an extension to Google now; It’s called Google Assistant. Using AI and machine learning it basically improves the two-way conversation experience of Google now.
These advances add context to your questions, as demonstrated in Google I/O. You can ask “What is Draymond Green’s jersey number?’ (These type of questions stump other assistants). And follow this question with a follow-up like “Where did he go to college?” Google will be able to connect the “he” pronoun to the previous question and answer you.
Google assistant will also be available for Android N and Android Auto-Head unit devices. Here’s how Google explained it’s new assistant:
The assistant is a conversational – an ongoing two-way dialogue between you and google that understands your world and helps you get things done. It makes it easy to buy movie tickets while on the go, to find that perfect restaurant for your family to grab a quick bite before the movie starts, and then helps you navigate to the theater.
And with it’s AI and Machine learning algorithms. Google assistant is always learning and evolving to carter to your needs and style. In time it’ll be like having your own personal assistant (Jarvis anyone?).
Google home looks like an exciting prospect. And it’s the first real challenge to Amazon’s Echo! We look forward to how Google builds on it. Google said the device will be available later this year.
