Preview of iOS 10
iOS 10 – Preview of the best iOS release yet?
Apple’s WWDC 2016 event saw the preview of iOS 10. To mark the 10th iteration of iOS, apple has left no stone unturned to make it their best update yet.
One of the most popular intelligent assistant in the world, Siri in iOS 10 will be able “to do so much more” as per Apple.
Apple announced that with iOS 10 they’re opening up Siri for 3rd party developers. Which means Siri can now be a lot more productive: Need to send a message to a friend in WeChat, Siri can do it. Need to book a ride, Siri will book it for you through uber, Didi (in which apple recently invested) or Lyft!
Search photo’s to send money to friends, to making your next skype call or play, pause or stop your fitness workout; Siri can help you with all these and more now. A smarter and more capable Siri is certainly a great development.
Apple has completely reworked notifications with iOS 10. Now with “raise to wake”, your iPhone screen will turn on when you pick it up. With a new lock screen, which see’s the ever-present ‘slide to unlock’ removed, you will see all your notifications displayed on your lockscreen.
You just need to press “home” to unlock the screen.
IOS 10 also see’s 3D touch come to the fore. A rich lockscreen notification now allows you to first see similar notifications bunched together in bubbles, 3D touch enables you to hard press on them and start getting more options to complete your tasks, without needing to unlock your screen!
You also get a “clear all” option in your notification center to, well do as it says, clear all notifications in one go. The control center has been tweaked as well, with night shift having now moved above the quartet of bottom shortcuts.
iMessage is also getting a bunch of new features with iOS 10. From easy access to other apps from within iMessage for creating and sharing of content, to making payments and more; features like invisible ink, which can be used to obscure photos, which need to be wiped to view and get surprised!
iMessage also comes with new emoji’s, 72 new emoji developed by the Unicode consortium. It also has integrated Disney stickers and “hand-write” feature to send meaningful replies in what apple is calling “digital ink”. iMessage is also introducing more effects like bubble, disco mode and reply by tapback, which provides you with 6 contextual replies for you to choose and send.
iMessage is going to get even more fun to use!
Maps, Music and Photos
iOS 10 fixes one of the biggest con’s of Apple Maps – it’s inability to scroll ahead on a route. Now you can scroll ahead, pan and zoom through your map. Apple also is starting to give traffic updates and has integrated suggestions. For example if it knows you’re on a regular route, like on your way to work, Maps now offers suggestions of better routes to nearby coffee shops. And (finally!) Apple is opening up Maps for third party developers; so expect to see a lot more improvement and uses of Maps in apps like uber and more.
Apple Music is getting a redesign for iOS 10. A cleaner design, which allows the cover art to stand out more, better music suggestion and also showing lyrics are few of the improvements. Though you won’t be able to enjoy Apple Music much, unless you subscribe.
Photos for iOS 10 will be a smarter app. With the use of deep learning technology, Apple has developed what it calls “Advanced computer vision” which lets the app sort-out to search your photos – through facial recognition, object and scene recognition.
Also Memories feature will now remind you about events in your life, like your last birthday pictures or your last holiday photos bunched in an album.
Phone, News and Home
iOS 10 is rumored to come with a cool voicemail transcript idea! It’ll allow you to see your voicemail in text(No more need to listen to your pending voicemail’s!). Apple is also planning to alert you if your calls are spam and VoIP calls can now be taken just like a normal call.
IOS 10 also see’s a redesign of the popular News app. With new subscriptions made available, more integration to show breaking news on your notification and better ergonomically designed app. News is going to get better than ever.
HomeKit is finally appearing in iOS 10. It’ll let you control all your home’s IoT gadgets in one app. Easy to use interface and with Siri and Control center helping out. Controlling your home environment by your phone is going to get a lot more easier!
Deep learning technology is fully integrated into iOS 10, and Apple assures its users that it will be confined to your phones processor only. Terming it “differential privacy”, Apple assures its users that it won’t invade your personal data.
IOS 10 looks like an exciting prospect with lots of new features to discover and enjoy. The Beta edition is releasing this July and the final version – come this Fall. We can’t wait to get our hands on the beta and then the final version of iOS 10!
