Review – Apple iPhone 7 & 7 Plus

After much anticipation, Apple has finally launched their Fall 2016 collection: New iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, iWatch 2 and introducing the new Apple AirPods.
To begin, iPhone 7 still features the same design which we’ve seen in iPhone 6 and 6S; while apple introduced a new jet-black colour scheme, there hasn’t been any real creativity from Apple on design front.
Add on to it, no edge-screen like Samsung or wireless charging. Apple is still lagging behind on certain technologies compared to their competitors. But what is novel about the new iPhone 7 is the dual-camera in the 7 Plus version (more on this later) and of course, you guessed it, No Headphone Jack!
Design
As remarked earlier there hasn’t been any real design change done to the phone. But apple has smoothed out the antenna-edges which iPhone 6S showed, to make the iPhone 7 look more single block design type. The biggest change of course is the lack of a headphone jack, instead you get earpods which are to be plugged into the lightening connector jack. Jury is still out there if this has enhanced apple’s audio performance?
iPhone 7 is now officially splash and dust proof. So now iPhone can take a light dip in water or even a shower with you!
But I would still caution you from taking a full swim with it.
And finally, iPhone 7 has a new Home button. It no longer is a mechanical button, but instead it’s a solid-state button working in tandem with the new taptic engine. It takes some getting used to..
Of course the home button still acts as a fingerprint scanner, which also is linked to your Apple Pay account.
Camera
iPhone 7 comes with an upgraded camera; which see’s the introduction of optical image stabilization, an f/18 aperture and a 6 element-lens setup which makes it even better for shooting photos and videos in low light.
Whereas iPhone 7 Plus is where the real innovation lies; it comes with a dual-camera system. The 12 MP camera placed in iPhone 7 works here with a 12 MP telephoto camera that can give you an even closer look of your targeted picture. That means you can now optical zoom up to 2x and digital zoom up to 10x for photos and 6x for videos.
The new dual-camera system also comes with breakthrough ISP technology. Also coming soon to iPhone via a camera software update would be the depth-of-field effect. This would allow you to keep faces sharp while creating a blurred background. The effect is known as the bokeh effect – which was previously reserved for DSLR cameras only.
Retina HD Display
iPhone 7 now has a new wide colour gamut, similar to those used by the digital cinema industry. Thus, it means more variety and depth of colour and a 25% brighter retina display.
iPhone 7 continuous to support 3D touch, which is now even more integrated with iOS10. So you have more diversity in how you can work with your content in an iPhone.
Processor
iPhone 7 comes with a new A10 Fusion chip-set that comes with an all new architecture which enables for faster processing power, when you need it. But it also has the ability to use even less power when you aren’t using the phone.
iPhone 7 achieves faster processor power but with more efficiency, thanks to it’s all new four-core design. The A10 fusion chip consists of two high-performance cores and two high-efficiency cores. This means you get the best balance of blazing fast processing speed and high level of efficiency.
This translates into iPhone 7 being credited to giving “the longest battery life in an iPhone ever”.
Audio
iPhone 7 introduces stereo speakers in an iPhone for the first time. Apple claims the new sound system is delivering double in audio output compared to iPhone 6S.
Apple also introduced Earpods with lightening connector. As stated earlier, iPhone 7 no longer supports a headphone jack But it comes with a 3.5 mm headphone jack adapter, for people who want to listen from their old headphones.
Finally, Apple demonstrated Airpods! (For more about Airpods, follow this link)
iOS 10 and more
iPhone 7 comes loaded with iOS 10; which Apple claims to be the most advanced Mobile OS ever. For more about all the features of iOS 10, which makes iPhone 7 so good, please follow this link.
iPhone 7 features advance LTE which it claims to be 50 % faster than iPhone 6s. With LTE speed of up to 450 Mbps and thanks to even more LTE bands, iPhone 7 is one of the best world-roaming phone you can lay your hands on.
Siri is now even more deeply integrated with iOS 10; with advancement in machine learning technologies. This will be the best Siri experience yet.
Conclusion
Even though there isn’t much of a change in the look of the iPhone. It’s got enough improvements and new technologies to tempt people into purchasing it. iOS 10 is a solid platform and iPhone 7 performs beautifully in audio, camera to speed and functionality.
Without a doubt it is one of the best phones in the market for 2016; but it also falls short in introducing few technologies like wireless charging to edge-screen.
Overall I would give the iPhone 7 a thumbs up and 9/10 rating.
